Apple TV 4K new from Swisscom

  • Dear community

Swisscom is adapting its offering to the needs of its customers and launching Apple TV 4K as an alternative to Swisscom Box 21 on May 23, 2022. This means that Apple fans can now use their blue TV subscription (including TV Air Free) via the blue TV app on Apple TV 4K. As of May 23rd, only the Swisscom Box 21 and Apple TV 4K will be available.

The new Swisscom remote control for Apple TV is available to match the Apple TV 4K. This was specially developed for watching TV with Apple TV 4K and is very easy to use.

You can find out more about installing and using Apple TV 4K on our help pages starting May 23rd.

Do you use Apple TV? Or could you consider switching to Apple TV 4K?

We look forward to your comment. 😊

I myself use the Apple TV Box in parallel with Box 21. So I’ll see if I want to leave it out and place box 21 somewhere else.

It’s certainly a good thing that Swisscom is now taking this route, just as its competitors have been doing for some time.

However, I think it’s a disadvantage if you don’t have a numeric keypad on the FB, and you’ve gotten used to some buttons that the new Apple TV remote control (including the Swisscom solution) no longer has.

Certainly interesting for new customers and for everyone who can live without number keys. It’s certainly not for the established Swisscom TV Box users and for many seniors 😉

The specially designed Apple remote control certainly has its advantages (illuminated buttons, TV Guide button, etc.), but it also has disadvantages for users of the Siri Remote > only pushbuttons, no more swiping / more complicated entry of passwords / multi feed option for DAZN, for example, not always ready to work and somewhat complicated menu navigation / remote control cannot be charged like Siri Remote, is powered by batteries.

The control ring is not for people with gross motor skills and can easily get stuck under certain circumstances.

I have a remote control of this type from another provider, but after three weeks I switched back to the Siri Remote.

Apple has simply solved the problem with passwords in connection with an iPhone. You get a push notification to enter the password on the iPhone. So an advantage if you are already an Apple iPhone user.

However, experience has shown that there will also be some users who are not otherwise in the Apple cosmos and Apple TV is their only point of contact with this wonderful device.

So I would only buy the remote control as a supplement to my Apple TV 4K.

I did the same because I already have an Apple TV. Connecting works just as quickly as with Siri Remote, and you can change the remote controls at any time.

@Anonymous The Box21 option remains open for these customers.

Otherwise you still have the original Apple TV FB.

By the way, the TV Guide function is not only limited to Blue TV, also for example. Zattoo it works. But if you are at e.g. the German provider Waipu TV and presses TV Guide, the corresponding main provider (here it will be Blue TV) will be opened.

I currently have a Swisscom TV Box with a fabric cover and an Apple TV HD.

For me it would definitely be an option to switch to an Apple TV 4K. So I can do everything with one box.

It’s a shame the remote control doesn’t have any number buttons.

Exactly the same for me! However, I still have some doubts about its user-friendliness… With the Apple TV solution, I probably have to start Apple TV first, then start the Blue TV app in the main menu, then navigate to the desired channel in the guide… pretty similar to that e.g. the Netflix app…

In connection with Replay, I often look for a specific program in the Blue TV app on the iPad and then display it out of the app but on the TV-Box with the large TV - this also works with the Apple TV app (i.e. on on the iPad and display it on the TV via the Apple TV app)?

Am I also correct that I have to pay an additional 5 francs if I want to operate the Apple TV as a “box” (at least as long as I still use the Blue TV-Box at the same time)?

That’s exactly where I have my concerns too.

If so, then I would appreciate the fact that Blue TV is called up when I turn it on. The basic screen comes on my current Apple TV. From there you would then have to start the app, which is probably not as user-friendly as a box.

I don’t think Apple allows you to customize the software, so the app probably has to be opened manually, like another app.

I also think that the CHF 5.00 is due, unless you deactivate the normal Swisscom TV Box and replace it with the Apple TV

The former is not currently possible, but is on the roadmap, although without a date.

The second is correct. The CHF 5.- is for the additional stream, regardless of which box is connected behind it. Except, as the previous speaker said, when Apple TV is the first box.

A short bit of information from me about the difference.

The TV experience via the blue TV app is not quite the same as via our TV-Box. When using the app, there are the following restrictions, which are already known from use with the app:

    - No teletext
    - No radio
    - No subtitles
    - Stereo sound
    - No UHD quality

    Kind regards, Raphael

Yes, I’m sure. The streams on Smart TVs are already UHD, but Apple TV is not yet (until further notice).

Thank you both for the clarification.

UHD channels without a UHD stream are a little difficult to understand and should definitely be upgraded.

Perhaps this could also be combined with the ongoing upgrade of the HD channels to Full HD at blue TV?
