Too many photos for ZIP

  • Hello everyone. Unfortunately I have 40k photos on the cloud because I have needed them to back up my photos for 10 years. (Meanwhile, I know this is wrong). I would like to make a second backup on an HD. The ZIP route is very complicated. It should be possible to synchronize the cloud with an HD and then let the PC work 24 hours. Does anyone here know a solution. In my opinion, Swisscom has to offer a solution if they want to change Swisscom customers to a payment model.

    • hed and DomiP like that.

myCloud distinguishes between files and photos.

Thanks to the automatic photo upload, photos have now been created on myCloud and unlike files, photos on myCloud cannot be synchronized with anything, i.e. neither with a hard disk nor directly with a PC.

So there is no way around the download option provided by myCloud.

For large quantities, it is strongly recommended to create sensible subsets and download them as individual groups.

In connection with the abolition of Docsafe, Swisscom has made it possible to easily download all data stored in Docsafe. And that’s exactly what customers who want to leave MyCloud now expect, and rightly so in my opinion.

A feature like Google Takeout allows you to download the files directly. A counterpart would also be helpful for myCloud (note, about a year ago I suggested the batch download, and @cymett didn’t respond to it either 😞).

The distinction between images and files also seems artificial to me…

It will definitely be structured like this:

    customers/

    ├─ hans/

    │ ├─ images/

    │ │ ├─ 123.jpg

    │ ├─ files/

    │ │ ├─ sample.pdf/

    ├─ fritz/

    ├─ lisa/

    ├─ Anna/

It should be possible to download the “Userhome”?

@DomiP File is file, data is data. Of course, the distinction is only artificial, but it is intentional. There may be various reasons why Swisscom still does not allow a more convenient option for synchronizing photos locally.

The most heralding will be that they wanted to offer customers a way to store endless photos without putting a strain on local disk space. The automatic photo upload to the cloud from the cell phone speaks for this; And the idea is great too.

Another reason could be that you now have neither time nor money, and perhaps you also lack the know-how. Maybe that will change once the change is complete and as many customers as possible don’t jump ship and pay for the storage space.

The truth, as always, will probably lie somewhere in between. Swisscom has been caught up in its own success, and now costs are exploding, profits are collapsing elsewhere and the expansion strategy is now costing more money than planned. Resources are not unlimited, and you now look at where something good has the potential to bring in a little more money. Actually legitimate.

@kaetho they also say, “A table is a table” 😉

Sure, you’re right, but it would be helpful to at least publish an API for it. This would also make the integration of myCloud easier and could therefore ensure more customers (imagine if you could export the data directly into myCloud directly from a Swissair tool or similar)…

myCloud was introduced purely as an additional customer loyalty tool for existing and new Swisscom subscriptions.

Strategically, it was certainly never a goal to really make money with it as a dedicated individual product, nor to really compete with the international market leaders in the maximum possible functionality of a cloud.

The really new thing about the change to the increased cost obligation of myCloud is that customers should also finance the costs of maintaining their customer loyalty to Swisscom themselves in addition to the subscription price.

It is therefore not surprising that there are no sensible functionalities to make it as easy as possible to get your photos out again, because allowing customers to go out again as easily as possible was certainly never in Swisscom’s specifications due to the priority customer loyalty goal -Purchaser for the myCloud systems that were to be set up at the time.

Currently, the question of existence will certainly arise for the future of myCloud within the next year:

Is it even possible to sell a new, successful individual product that is profitable on the Swiss market using a purely marketing-driven repositioning based on a customer loyalty instrument that was previously included in the subscription anyway?

We will probably finally know in about 12 months.

And it certainly remains to be seen whether Swisscom’s idea of requiring customers to explicitly opt out of the new paid additional subscriptions by deleting the previous content will ultimately bring more income than hassle…

@DomiP sure, that would be nice. I assume that the product will be further developed. Then there will be some money left over for things like that.

@Werner don’t think the product will die. Users like @Pat88, who see value in it and are willing to pay for it, will form the majority. People like me, who actively try to get under 10GB of data asap and switch subscriptions early, are a small minority.

And once you have separated the wheat from the chaff in March/April 2022, there will no longer be any reason not to provide simple export or sync functions for paying customers. At least that’s what I would expect.

    @kaetho

That’s exactly what I expect now and not until spring 2022.

Swisscom has changed the rules of the game, that is their right. But then Swisscom should please be fair and make it easier for customers who no longer want to be there under the changed rules to exit and not put obstacles in the way.

@hed @kaetho I’m not legally a crack, but isn’t there a clause somewhere for such topics that users have the opportunity to download their data at any time?

For example, for a teaching project I requested all telecommunications data from Swisscom by letter…

WhatsApp and Instagram also have such a feature.

I’m explicitly talking about the “takeout” features here and not a dedicated feature for the download. I find it crazy that it’s not possible to select all photos using “Select All”.

I’ve been working on exporting the photos (some of them negative digitized ones) from our family accounts and then loading them into OneDrive for more than a week now. (This time also on a physical medium!). But the fact that sometimes it simply stops downloading (let alone speed) is abysmal.

@DomiP I’m not the right person to contact, but Swisscom doesn’t make it impossible for you to get the photos from the cloud. It’s just not as convenient as we would like. But it works. I did this directly from the cloud, month after month.
