Box 21 often gets stuck

  • Does anyone else often have problems with the Box21?

The image freezes and sometimes it no longer responds to key presses on the remote control.

After restarting (unplugging the power cable, a switch would be handy^^) everything works again.

I had to restart the old UHD box on average once a week using the on-off switch so that everything worked again.

However, the Box21 practically every day.

Both were connected the same way, via a cable (2m) directly to the router (IB2).

    @thoems

    thanks for the contribution

Please specify the connection mode Box21 <-> IB2

The best quality is achieved with an Ethernet cable

WLAN / Powerline / WLAN kit frequent malfunctions

Unfortunately, RESET / REBOOT are often temporary solutions

It is also possible that the B21 is defective. Request a change from Swisscom

It is best to completely disconnect the TV-Box from the power supply (power strip) when not in use. This means I have a new box every evening and I avoid the senseless waste of energy caused by devices in standby.

@thoems The fact is that we are still looking for a problem that is causing the box to freeze.

The problem often occurs with time-shifted consumption (live pause / replay / recording) or app use, but is not only limited to these use cases.

However, it seems to occur extremely rarely for many customers (I have never had it before and am running one of the first Swisscom Box 21 ever and also use it intensively for testing in the home office for several hours a day) and others seem to run into the problem more often or even regularly.

You write that the problem occurs very regularly for you. Can you possibly tell me in which situations it occurs so frequently? (e.g. certain apps?)

Is there perhaps a parallel to the UHD box? Here too, a weekly necessary reboot is clearly well above average (the average is several times higher). Have you had similar problems that may have occurred in similar situations?

For us, more detailed information can help us understand the problem better.

You could try deep standby, but I'm not sure whether it reduces the likelihood of the problem or whether it has no effect. The data available on this is still somewhat sparse.

    Problem 1: Image freezes

It actually always occurs in replay or streaming apps --> restart

Problem 2: App closes immediately after starting a movie

This happens from time to time with streaming apps. After restarting the app it usually works, if not --> restart

Problem 3: Replay no longer works

It sometimes happens that another episode cannot be played in replay --> restart

Problem 4: Play is not possible after pause

Sometimes a paused replay program can no longer be played, i.e. no reaction to the remote control (Play button), sometimes it no longer responds to any button presses (Home, Back, etc) --> restart

With the UHD box only problems 2 and 3 occurred, with the 21 all 4.

Our box often runs all day, often just with YouTube as background music

    9 months later

Our Box21 is currently stuck practically every day. First the remote control loses the connection after about 1-2 hours, then the box logs off at some point. Pulling the plug is the only solution. Unfortunately, the new IB3 has not brought any improvement.

@Noers I don't have the box lubricated almost every day, more like once or twice a week, maybe @RomanE can take a closer look at that, maybe it will help, the cause of this problem to narrow down or finally find.

@Noers This problem is known, but should not occur frequently.

For me, the problem in question occurs maybe once every 2-3 weeks, and this in normal sleep mode.

What software do you currently have on the box?

Maybe it's also because it's a little better for me because we Super Users have newer software.

You can try whether it is a little better with the DeepStandby setting (it will then take a little longer to start). You can find this in the settings under TV Box -> Energy saving -> Sleep mode -> Energy saving mode.

Or alternatively, de-energize the box, e.g. B. with a Swisscom Smart Switch, MyStrom Switch or a simple power strip with an on/off toggle switch.

    @roku73

That's exactly what I do with all devices, not because of a possible bug, but rather to avoid wasting energy unnecessarily and also for security reasons. Every device that is connected to electricity is also a potential source of fire hazard.

As a positive side effect, I rarely have problems with my devices because they restart every day.

@hed Anyone who follows your tips and tricks here already knows this 😉.

Of course you can save energy and thus eliminate the risk of a fire.

But if you want to use Smart Home systems, you can't always turn everything off.

Therefore, everyone should do it the way they can agree with their conscience.

Not everyone has been following the forum for years, new customers are constantly being added.

Yes, of course, it's just one of many tips, everyone should decide as they see fit.

The box is connected directly via an Ethernet cable. To be honest, I've only had the problem for about 1.5 months (SW version 8.156.13 from November 25th). Previously it was very stable for over a year. The second identical box works without any problems with the same software.
