5G vs 5G-fast: What's the difference?

  • Dear community

On Swisscom’s network coverage map there are many areas with 5G coverage and some with 5G-fast. What is the speed difference between these two standards?

    Thanks and greetings.

    • Until now, the terms 5G Fast (= 5G+) and Wide (5G) have been used in the media.

The smartphones currently available with 5G only support 5G+ and cannot be updated. The devices of the second 5G generation should then support both 5G standards.

For the non-technically oriented consumer, I find it very confusing if a 5G phone does not support 5G but only 5G+. Quote from the Swisscom website:

“Swisscom offers 5G coverage to over 90% of the Swiss population. The very first generation of 5G devices (such as the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G or the Samsung Galaxy Note10+ 5G) only support one 5G band (N78), so can These devices only use 5G+.”

    Hello Mark

I quote directly from the 5G page (www.swisscom.ch/5G):

5G describes the latest generation of mobile communications, regardless of the frequencies (bands) used, the application or bandwidths. 5G+ also refers to the use of 5G with high bandwidths, which enables speeds of up to 2 Gbit/s. Without 5G+, 5G offers speeds of up to 1 Gbps.

So in the future we will talk about 5G+ and 5G.

    Best regards, Ruben
