plugged in wifi router to create a subnet

Hello, I would like to create a subnetwork by connecting a wifi router to the Swisscom Box 2. Is this possible and what should I configure in the box?

Example:

SwisscomBox: 192.168.1.1

2nd router: 192.168.2.1

yes, in internet-box2 switch to expert mode, add a static route

internet-box login > admin authentication and password > Expert mode > Network settings > static routes > complete fields add address > target network 192.168.2.0, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, transmit to device 192.168 .2.1, save and restart the router

if necessary in the Internet-box section (cog symbols) > Restart tab > Restart the Internet-Box

Good morning,

I also find it difficult to install my Asus router as a second router with the internet box 2.

I follow your explanation and I get the message that the address 192.168.2.1 is in an unauthorized range! so I’m stuck.

If you have a solution?

With my thanks.

Hello @Molimo,

What model is your Asus router? Is it really a router and not an “access point” (AP)? Afterwards, to be able to help you effectively, why do you want to create a second subnetwork?

Good morning,

Thank you for your response,

The model of my Router is an Asus RT-AC68U.

I want to install it because I was already using it before having box 2. It has more possibilities and I want to install the configuration for my VPN from NordVPN on it.

Thank you in advance for your response.

Okay, so this case if I understand correctly your ASUS router should remain your main router.

To do this, you must connect the WAN port of your ASUS to one of the LAN ports of the Swisscom router and configure the fixed address 192.168.1.5 on the ASUS WAN port. Connect your entire local network to the ASUS and configure the DMZ zone on your Swisscom router by specifying the address 192.168.1.5, so all traffic will be sent to the ASUS. At least that’s what I understood of what you want to do.

If I plug my Asus router directly behind the Internet-box 2 in DMZ, is security compromised? Is there a firewall needed between the two?

Thank you for your response.

There is a firewall on the Asus router. But I especially don’t want to lower the security compared to the original installation of box 2.

I don’t know the ASUS hardware but I don’t think the Swisscom internet box offers much better security. In any case there are no specific settings on this point on the box. The important thing is to have control over port opening and redirection, the packet analysis and on-the-fly antivirus functions are a plus but I think it’s more marketing.

In conclusion, the only way to have good security is to control and control what enters and leaves your local network.

I understand your explanations well and thank you for it. Last question, the TV box and the telephone remain on the Swisscom router or should they connect to the Asus router?

The telephone and TV box remain on the Swisscom box. The TV box uses specific protocols that might be difficult to configure on the Asus router.

When I try to change the address of the Asus router to 192 168.1.5 here is the response: The local area network (LAN) and the wide area network (WAN) cannot use the same IP address and subnet.!

The Swisscom router has the address 192.168.1.1 and the Asus router 192.168.2.1

Thanks for your patience.

Good morning,
Thank you for your response. I have no problem with NordVPN. It seems that Swisscom’s Internet-box 2 is restricted for other networks. I had no problem with the old Swisscom router. For now I’m leaving aside my second router and I’m going to put NordVPN on each device. Thank you all.
