Hi,

I’d like to know the bandwidth used by each of the devices in my home network, both within the network and to/from the outside world. I suspect one of the machines is hogging the bandwidth and I would like to know which.

Are you trying to troubleshoot a specific issue?

You can check the current used bandwidth of the device on the Internetbox WiFi diagnostic page. You must enable the expert mode to access it.

However, it seems that these statistics are not really accurate. Maybe we can help you to troubleshoot your problem if you tell us more about it.

It’s not so much a specific issue as a complaint from my kids that they can’t play games “because of the network”. It goes like this:

Kid: Dad, I can’t play Fortnite! I CAN’T PLAY FORTNITE!!!

Me: um, ok, what seems to be the problem?

Kid: The network is too slow!

Me: ok, let me check the bandwidth [does several speed tests, including router <-> outside and kid’s machine <-> outside]… uh, as far as I can tell, the tests are ok.

Kid: but it lags! [And indeed it does.]

I typically have 370 Mbits/s download and 90 Mbits/s upload from the router, and between 10 and 20 Mbits/s download for any individual machine. So I am trying to see if one of the machines might be hogging the network, or if my topology might be suboptimal.

Let’s try to dive a bit deeper:

What kind of device is your kid using? a gaming-console? PC? Laptop?

If available, enable the network performance details pop-up in Fortnite. This way, we should get a general overview of what happens with the network connection during a gaming session. Games typically don’t use/need a ton of bandwidth, but latency (ping) is crucial. If you see spikes in the latency and game over Wi-Fi, try to connect the device directly to the router with a LAN cable.

Can you describe the lags a bit? Does the game stutter (low framerate), or are players desyncing (teleporting around)? Did it work before?

I’m definitely going to enable the network performance details as you mention; I can already say that both desyncing and spikes in latency occur. The problem is that they do not occur all the time, and I’m trying to put my finger on exactly what causes them - I suspect that it’s mostly network usage by (an)other machine(s), but I don’t know how to make sure.

The problems occur on various machines including a PC running Windows 11 and a PS5.
