XGS-PON capable unTangle router ?

Hi,

I'm using right now a bridged Zyxel XMG3927 with a custom made unTangle router for my home setup. It works great btw, I can reach the advertised 500/100 no problem.

I plan to move into a 10000Mbit/s capable appartment, so I wanted to know if I could reuse my unTangle router? Since all routers in Switzerland are locked from bridging (*&*!*$*&*&*!$%&%), what is the best option to avoid double NAT with the provided ISP router?

What I know about:

media converters for 10G exist, but no idea after that.
mimicking a Zyxel AX7501 by putting a SFP+ card in my router. No idea if it will work.

Anyone with a similar setups and advices?

I already have a X550-T2 card, so in an ideal world, I would use a media converter, but I'm open.

Ask yourself whether you really need to run a custom router. If the answer is no, you'll make your life so much easier.

@bitracer Again the initial request was one and a half year ago, as yesterday I suppose the problem is resolved.

Swisscom routers used to not have QoS at all, so it was a deal breaker.

Even so today, untangle or pfSense have way more functionalities. Untangle profiles for QoS priorities are amazing btw. Also all the firewalling rules (block all from RU and CN).

And for the gamers out there bufferbloat is a real issue.

Now, to be honest, most servers like Steam or Epic will not give you 10gpbs up so you won't fill the bandwidth so you won't have bufferbloat.

However in a house with Netflix 4k, some Twitch streams, 2 or 3 gamers and everyone downloading updates for Warzone, I can see the 10gpbs fill up and make some lag spikes for the ones gaming.

But yeah, after 3 months on 10gbps I realized that the internet is not ready for consumer 10gbps and the difference with 1gbps is not that big (except for Warzone 100GB DLs xD)

With gigabit or even 10Gbit internet, the QoS is much less of an issue than it was before when you used IP telephony with fairly limited bandwidth for remaining services.

What you describe is extreme use case. I wouldn't even bother, just get the fastest connection you can afford and you should be fine.

This is the direction where we're going, there will be more and more P2MP connections and running a third party hardware will be harder and harder (at least with traditional ISP providers).
