I have a new DSL connection. When connecting to the standard WLAN Motorola modem through a cable the speeds are just fine and a bit above the norm for my subscription level. However, when I connect using the wireless functionality, speed is much, much slower, both on my wife's MAC as well as on my HP Windows notebook. The strange thing is that this speed deteriorated in the span of a week's time, after having been pretty good the first couple of weeks.
When looking into this, I first discovered that the WLAN capability was turned off on the central modem options settings. That I found strange because I thought that would mean that I would not be able to connect wirelessly at all, however I could. So I turned the WLAN functionality on. This seems to have resulted in somewhat of an improvement, but not much. The speeds are still significantly slower using wireless than when connecting through cable.
Another strange thing is that, on our previous address, about 4 km away from where we are now, the wireless speeds were just great, with the same level of subscription, the exact same type of modem and the very same notebooks. Also, where we lived prior to our last home, these two notebooks achieved also great wireless speeds on a very basic, older modem.
So the issue seems to be with the modem to me; I always understood the wireless connection should not be slower than cable, at least not with a basic DSL subscription (which is what we have, just the most basic one).
Anyone any thoughts?
