VPN with Proton

  • Hello

I’m trying to activate Proton’s VPN on the Swisscom router. But I can’t do it without asking you.

Proton has the following VPN router guides. But I can’t say what’s going on here because some of these instructions are beyond my understanding.

Do any of you have experience with ProtonVPN on swisscon modem?

    I have model VRV951A

    Thank you

We have partnered with InvizBox to create a router specifically for Proton VPN. This router is open source and configured to connect easily to your Proton account.

    • Unfortunately, this is not possible on the Swisscom router.

Here is the original text of the website

“Note that routers your Internet service provider gives you will generally not support VPN configurations. ”

They can know. You can simply ask the providers. I know from both Germany and Switzerland that providers deliberately limit the functionality of their routers. In my opinion, this is not necessarily in order to bully customers, but to minimise the need for support. If I can’t adjust much, not many errors can occur.

Regarding your question why VPN on the router. It enables certain basic functions of VPNs (ad blocker, malware/spyware protection and tracking prevention) to be brought to devices (Smart TV, games console, etc.) on which the VPN client cannot be installed. Ultimately, everyone has to decide for themselves whether and why they use a VPN privately. Personally, the protection of my data and identity, protection against malware, etc. and as little to no advertising as possible are important to me.

      Hi Japporu76

Sorry, misread your post at first and thought the provider stated it was possible. 😅

That is ultimately also a detail.

I personally run adblockers etc locally - a VPN just moves all the problems elsewhere IMO.

Tracking nowadays happens in the apps/in the browser and not oldschool IP-based, nor does a VPN help against malware etc. (Tom Scott summarised this nicely a few years ago)

I also doubt whether the perceived security helps - but “everyone can do what they want” 😉

PS: Of course, there are also valid use cases for VPNs, but I would say that the vast majority of VPN users don’t even use them.
