Turning off your cell phone and restarting it also helps with the car

  • I’ve had very good experiences with turning off my phone and restarting it cold. Cars also have a lot of electronics, even more so than cell phones. The electronics are always on standby, because who wants to wait 5 minutes until they can start. But it can also happen that not everything works as desired.

The following helps: turn off the car, put on the handbrake. Disconnect the battery terminal from the negative pole, but definitely on the negative pole. A 10mm combination wrench is usually sufficient. Take a coffee break and then reconnect the battery. Switch on the ignition and wait until all control lamps light up as usual. Switch ignition off and on again, start engine, continue driving. This definitely helps in 99% of all cases. I have over 40 years of experience in this. Oh, a few times. The first time was with my daughter’s Opel Corsa with Multec injection, which got stuck idling at 1800 rpm. Then with my first Citroen C5, which stopped accelerating at the MFK Bern, of all places, and now a few times with my second Citroen C5, which suddenly started to jerk uncomfortably at a constant speed.

Well - nothing surprises me with a Frenchman…
Otherwise, such an occurrence is completely unknown to me - I’ve never read about it.

And if you have to, a battery disconnect switch is much more convenient:

How many times have you had to use this 10 key hack?

In my 20+ years of driving experience I’ve never needed this… but thanks for the tip anyway.

PS: The only thing I can remember in this context: when I changed the battery, all the saved stations were gone and the clock was at 00:00.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Oh, a few times. The first time was with my daughter’s Opel Corsa with Multec injection, which got stuck idling at 1800 rpm. Then with my first Citroen C5, which stopped accelerating at the MFK Bern, of all places, and now a few times with my second Citroen C5, which suddenly started to jerk uncomfortably at a constant speed. Friends also had similar problems that were solved this way. My TV also wants to be rebooted after 12 hours of continuous operation at the latest. You can tell this because it suddenly stops executing the remote control’s commands.
