Data roaming is not possible in Spain with prepaid

  • I’m in Spain and bought a 1GB data package to go with my prepaid. I also received a text message saying it was booked. But I don’t have any mobile data. I looked around here a bit and didn’t see a solution: in the cockpit there is a cost limit for roaming, but no block as in other posts (or I don’t see anything about blocks), I have mobile data activated on my cell phone (Android), data roaming activated.

What else could be the problem? I’m very grateful for any tips 🙂

    • Thanks for all your answers! It didn’t help, but you put me on the right track with the tip to manually select the network provider (didn’t help) but right next to it was the following setting for access points; and “Must be without internet” was set there. When I switched to Swisscom Services, everything went smoothly straight away.

      Hello Rautteuchi90

Network selection and restart have already been mentioned.

But the limit in the cockpit is not zero, is it?
And the “Data roaming is activated” control is set to blue in the cockpit?

Here’s a picture of how I’ve posted it for years and used it successfully on the Canary Islands:

Theoretically, data roaming should also work at limit 0.- (for mobile data), provided that a data package for the relevant country was previously successfully purchased (for a higher limit). Of course, buying again is only possible if you increase the limit again. Otherwise, roaming remains blocked.

Oh dear, I’m sorry, I didn’t know there were differences between prepaid and postpaid.

      @Samsi

The limit thing was just an idea because I read that Sunrise does that. That’s why I assumed that it could also be the case with Swisscom.

So I’m not 100% sure either, you’d have to try it out. But like I said, it should work. Buy a data package and then set the limit to zero. Since the purchased package is active immediately, you should be able to use it. If it didn’t work, buying it in advance wouldn’t do me any good. But I generally wouldn’t set the limit at 0.-, neither for data nor for calls. If that’s the case, you wouldn’t even be able to receive calls abroad. That’s why I would leave at least 20 francs in both categories.

Presumably someone explicitly set it up this way to avoid expensive data roaming costs with an additional blocker.

It could also have been on a previous phone and then migrated to the current phone.

Currently, the correct method would be to deactivate the basic tariffs in the cockpit in the settings of the prepaid number. This means that you can only surf with previously purchased data packages and also avoids uncontrolled data roaming costs.

In roaming, surfing is now only possible with a data package. At least at Swisscom. This is usually not the case with other providers. Here you have to buy a package yourself if you don’t want to pay such horribly high fantasy prices. I only saw it briefly on Sunrise for Spain, for example. 3.- for 1MB? Wtf…

      You’re right.

Maybe the blocker was installed to avoid the CHF 2/day in Switzerland and it is still relevant whether the basic tariff is active or not.

Yes, I have that suspicion too. Paradoxically, at Swisscom today it plays more of a role in international roaming. There are always people with incorrect settings, they are charged 2 francs a day just like that, because every smartphone always pulls data in the background. If you do the math, you can add up quite a bit per month for, so to speak, — nothing.
