Gast Wlan IB4 / Zyxel AX7501 IPv6 Dualstack

  • Hello everyone

I received an IB4 as a test subject and have had massive WiFi connection problems with older laptops for 4-7 years since then. When connecting to the guest WiFi I keep getting “Connection not possible” with these devices.

When I switch to the AX7501, the guest WiFi always works.

But I haven’t been able to successfully achieve an IPv6 dual stack. I am not receiving an IPv6 address. Has anyone managed native IPv6 (dual stack) with this router?

    greetings Albatross

Is the problem only present on the guest WiFi and not on the normal WiFi?

The difference with the guest WiFi is that it is only 2.4GHz and the internal network is not accessible.

@hed @WalterB Thanks for the tips. Wifi6 and WPA2/WPA3 were still active. I’ll watch this. Of course it would be ideal if you could deactivate WiFi6 only for the guest WiFi…

@hed it’s about both routers. When it comes to native ipv6, there is a current thread for dual stack operation. But I couldn’t find anything for the AX7501 and the ipv4/6 dualstack setting didn’t result in an ipv6 address.

The router itself wouldn’t be bad either. Was one of the first to try it out at Swisscom.

@hed But there were also problems with normal WiFi. e.g. the guest WiFi interfered with the normal 2.4 WiFi. the drivers may not be up to date for guests. But the problem is somehow exclusive to me with my IB4…

You write that you received the IB4 as a test subject. This may also be a box with a WLAN chipset that is not yet final. Anyway, you can only find out if you replace the IB4. If it’s still under warranty, this shouldn’t be a problem.

@Albatros2 I just linked something about the ipv4/6 dual stack from the forum for you, at home I only have the IB4 running without IPv6. I don’t own an AX7501, sorry.

@gnome2018 I had the Zyxel in operation with the Ip4only setting for a long time. When I read the topic here with native IPV6, I tried the IP46 dual stack mode in the broadband settings.

I then tried your firmware and even the newer one from the zyxel ftp server in the Swisscom folder. But no matter which device: no Internet via ipv6 and no ping response either.

I even set up the IB4 to check whether ipv6 was active there and it was and the devices worked over ipv6.

I read through the points in your blog and didn’t find any differences, except that I didn’t use the router as a bridge, but directly.

Since the guest WiFi on the ib4 now seems to be working, I don’t see any added value for the Zyxel at the moment.

    • hed likes that.

Then you have set something wrong, then I ask you for print screens.

As I said, it has to work but of course you can throw in the towel 😄 I can understand that.

Today the IB4’s wifi problem annoyed me for the last time!

So I put the AX7501 back into operation and thanks to the new C3.0 firmware, ipv6 now works for me too! Hurray!

The guest WiFi has new bugs on the Zyxel AX7501: No clean VLAN / firewall separation…

Do you use the guest WiFi of the Internet box and the Zyxel part in a router cascade, or do you have the Zyxel as the only router directly on the fiber optic? Your wording suggests that there is a certain separation, but not a clean one. Can you describe this in a little more detail?

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Correctly. AX7501-B1 as some device with V5.17(ABPC.4)D0. Every firmware has its own bugs. I haven’t received a newer FW.

To be on the safe side, I now use the following solution for the guest WiFi with another device on a LAN port… (temp solution): https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/wifi/guestwifi/guestwifi\ _dumbap

    Hopefully the fritzbox 5690 xgs will soon be a replacement… [https://community.swisscom.ch/t5/Router-Hardware/Fritzbox-5690-XGS-schon-im-Zertifiierungverfahren/td-p/752540](https://community.swisscom.ch/t5/Router- Hardware/Fritzbox-5690-XGS-already-in-the-certification-process/td-p/752540)
