3G hotspots

We visit our family in Switzerland often but have not done so since 2019 because of the pandemic. We purchased a SwissCom Mobile Travel Hotspot #G, HUAWEI E5330, in 2016 and used on several visits. Can we still use the device? I understand we will need a new Sim card and phone number, is this correct? What would be the cost to do that? What are the location to do so? Thank you.

You should be able to use your router as back then.

Regarding the SIM it is the easiest way to walk into a Swisscom Shop or from one of its opponents if needed.

When you are arriving in Zurich, at the Airport, head to Airport-Shopping directly on the Ground Floor next to the stairs down to the train station;-).

I would advise you to get a 4G access point, or use your mobile in tethering mode. You'll have much better experience.

Sure @bitracer it would be better, but not required. Swisscom does still operate its 3G-Network not as other Countries (like Germany) are shutting their networks down.

It would work in theory, but in practice it's a sea of pain. With very basic messaging and email usage one could maybe manage to get by with 3G. Anything beyond that and you're up for a lot of frustration. Why would anybody want to subject themselves to that?

Just about every smartphone supports tethering. Use that if you don't want to spend money on mobile hotspot.

You are correct @bitracer. But the main question was, if it is still working. And this is answered by yes - it is, allthough it is pain as hell and not really usable.

As you said, Thethering by Phone would be the easiest and cheapest way to use it 😉
