Hello,
I'm switching from Init7 FTTH and live in a rented apartment with strange internal wiring, and a tiny/badly placed media cabinet (where the OTO is) that I cannot really mount the internet box inside. To let me shut the media cabinet, to make things work well with wired connections, and to allow me to position the wifi router in a better place, I previously used a little TP-Link media converter to relay the fibre through the (not really) ethernet wiring in the apartment to where the router could be in the living room. That worked OK.
Now, when the Internet Box is plugged into the OTO with the SwissCom provided fibre, it all works. So, SwissCom delivered their part of the deal.
Unfortunately when the TP-Link is plugged into the OTO with the fibre I used previously, it doesn't work and gets no signal. I can't use the SwissCom fibre because of the gendered connectors - one side is square, the other side thin and rectangular. The fibre I have now has the same connector type on both sides.
From reading around, it seems the problem is that SwissCom is using now XGS-PON as confirmed by the label on the fibre packet. This enables 10GBit networking. Apparently, my TP-Link cannot speak this protocol. Either that, or the cable itself is physically different, or both.
But here's the thing - I only ordered a 1Gbit/s connection. I can't use 10Gbit and don't want it. What I'd really like to do actually, is just switch to SwissCom with minimum hassle and minimal new equipment needed. I already had to purchase an SFP module for the Internet Box so the media converter has any chance of working at all. Now it seems, I may need a new media converter too?!
Does anyone know if there's a way to be downgraded from XGS-PON to whatever older standard my previous ISP might have been using? Or maybe the issue is the fibre optics and if I buy an XGS-PON compatible cable with the same connector type on both ends, it would work? My guess is "no" and this is just bad luck for me, but would like to confirm. Otherwise, I am not quite sure what can be done. Probably, it would require talking to the landlord and trying to convince him to pay for a guy to come and do cable run to one of the wall sockets, but this would also probably require changing the socket type as right now it's some weird proprietary Swiss connector, and overall it just seems painful and slow. I'd prefer to be able to use my existing stuff.
