Alternative to Internet Booster / Bad Copper + Mobile reception / Starlink & Dual WAN

I live a bit more out in the countryside with pretty slow copper connection (16Mbit down, 1Mbit up).

We qualified for a free Internet Booster 4G and it has actually made a big difference:
Now we are at 20Mbit down / 5Mbit up!

(The mobile reception is also not that great - for any provider, and common satellite kits cost a lot for not that good of a connection / high latency).

While I'm actually quite grateful for every single Mbit I get, that is still way too slow for a household of 5 people in the time of home office + video conferencing. As soon as someone is updating software the internet connection drops out for everyone else.

I have applied for Starlink over a year ago, as I do not see any improvement from Swisscom's side anytime within the next decade - but wanted to ask the community:

- Do you have any ideas how I can improve the internet speeds with the limitations I have, at a reasonable price?

- Once I do have a Starlink kit - is there a way of adding a 2nd WAN input to the Internet Box 3?

-> is it possible to use something like the starlink modem instead of the Internet Booster for a similar function?
-> or would I have to use a separate router to combine Starlink and IB3?

As a sidenote:
The Booster 5G would probably not make a difference: We do have 5G, but no new antenna has been built so it's pretty much the same speed as 4G. The next mobile network antenna is a few km away + behind a hill, so yeah...

Apart from that, we would have to pay extra to get it, while we got the 4G booster "for free".

I mean - even now we pay for more than we get... I don't think that situations like ours are considered in the pricing strategy of Swisscom 😅

In Switzerland, the project is scheduled to start in mid-2021, according to the website. A lot has to be paid for the connection with at least 100 MBit/s downstream and 20 MBit/s upstream. 94 francs should be paid directly, which will then probably be deducted from the hardware costs of 479 francs. Add to that the delivery costs of 62 francs and then you only have to pay a monthly fee of 92 francs.

but here too there are opponents again, as with 5G mobile radio.

In Switzerland, since February it has been possible to pre-register for Internet access via the Starlink website. He's not guaranteed. A monthly subscription costs just over 90 francs; the material costs, including delivery, should amount to 500 francs. According to the website, the internet connection should work in the second half of the year. The data speed should be as fast as with conventional cable connections.

Yeah, I pre-ordered in 02.2021 and am scheduled to receive sometime this year. I won't be surprised if it's next year.

Even 50Mbit is double what I have now, and Swisscom has stated that they are not planning to work on my area at all - so I assume the next 10 years will be the same.

4G and 5G networks are not an option as we have no line of sight to any nearby antenna, and the 4G booster reports a reception of -110dB

As I don't see any other feasible options (correct me if I'm wrong) the 2nd part of my question is probably more interesting:

- Is it possible to add a 2nd WAN port to the IB3?

-.. or would I really have to organise a 3rd router (IB3, Starlink, and one to combine the WAN)? 😕

Ich bin seit 02.2021 angemeldet, also eher vorne in der Warteschlange - wäre aber nicht erstaunt wenn es 2023 wird anstatt wie im Konto angegeben 2022.

Seitens Swisscom sehe ich aber keine Alternative - auf Anfrage wurde mir bestätigt, dass in meiner Region kein Ausbau geplant sei. Auch als wir mit dem Nachbarn bei der Gemeinde und Swisscom einen Antrag eingereicht haben, um die Kosten mitzufinanzieren, wurde dieser abgelehnt.

So erwarte ich da in den nächsten 10 Jahren keine grosse Änderung (Wer zieht schon für ein paar einzelne Häuser eine neue 1-3km-Leitung).

Satellitenbasiertes Internet welches nicht von Starlink ist kostet entweder ähnlich viel für eher begrenzten Service - hohe Latenzen, Datenbegrenzung usw.

Die einzige Alternative, die ich sehe, ist eine Richtfunkverbindung. Was aber auch teuer ist und natürlich eine Gegenstation erfordert.

Darum ist für mich eher der zweite Teil meiner Frage interessant - kann man auf der IB3 einen 2ten WAN-Eingang konfigurieren?

Oder müsste ich mir da eine Lösung mit einem 3ten Router überlegen (IB3 + Starlink + eigener Router)? 😕

The cellular booster might still help you, you can reasonable expect around 100Mb over 4G or even 200Mb if you're lucky. This is something to verify at your location.
