“Resolve host…” takes forever

  • For a few weeks now, the loading of our websites has been massively slowed down because it takes around 10 seconds to resolve the domain for every second URL (display in the browser status line: “Resolve host…”).

Subjectively, the problem occurs more often on a Mac than on Windows. We are connected via fiber optic and have a Vivo M subscription, the router’s firmware is 08.08.26/08.08.23/01177. Restarting computers and routers doesn’t help.

I found other discussions here in the forum dealing with similar issues. Swisscom reported there:

“The performance losses are caused by a defective component on a network element in Swisscom’s basic network. To resolve the problem, the component will be replaced during the night of Tuesday March 9, 2016 to Wednesday, March 10, 2016.”

Today is March 18, 2016 and we still have the problem.

Try switching to Google DNS as a test!

    What does the speed show?

The Quad9 DNS servers represent an interesting alternative to Google DNS. The global DNS network is provided by a consortium including IBM, Packet Clearing House, the Global Cyber Alliance and other partners. It should not collect user data but at the same time be highly available and protected against a wide variety of attacks. If you prefer to use this service, follow the steps above, but use 9.9.9.9 instead of 8.8.8.8. You can easily remember the latter, the service is called “Quad9”, which corresponds to the four nines of the IP address.

For everyone who is interested in the subject of DNS servers: I have been using the Quad9, i.e. the DNS server with the IP 9.9.9.9, which @WalterB has already mentioned, for 3 months now and it runs absolutely perfect.
