If the minimum contract period has expired, you could switch to a cheaper subscription (or prepaid) for this period so that the number remains available and online. This is afaik a requirement for WhatsApp.
When switching back from prepaid to a subscription, a new minimum contract period starts again, but not when switching from ABo to ABo (afaik)
