Swisscom TV kills Apple Airport Express

Hi,

I have peculiar problem with current internet/TV set-up, which appeared when I updated my Airport Express from 1st gen. version to 2nd gen.

I split the internet access with active switch (Zyxel ES-105A) between TV, Airport Express and desktop. This set-up worked perfectly before I update the Airport Express to the latest model. Now when I turn-on the TV box the Airport's internet connection basically dies! I tried the Airport Express directly from DSL router (i.e. before the switch) and then TV did not cause any issues. Also TV does not impact the desktop connection.

Any ideas to sort this out?

Hi,

TV box is connected directly to the switch. Additionally, the 2nd gen. Airport refered here is the lastest version, which some refer as the 4th gen.

let's summarize (Port number is only an example):

Router --> Switch --> Port 1 --> SCTV Box

                       --> Port 2 --> Airport express

I also tried to

Router--> Airport -->Switch --> SCTV Box and the same problem arises

Other devices from switch (desktop and PS3) are not impacted by this issue.

Are you sure that this switch supports multicast?

What happens if you connect the airport and the SCTV Box directly to the Swisscom Router?

If I connect directly to the router there is no issues. What makes the whole issue weird is that when I had the previous version of Airport Express the set-up worked perfectly. Once I changed to lastest version of the Airport Exress the issue arised.

I think the switch is fine as the there is no issues with the desktop connection while the SCTV box is on. But I am not expert so it could the that there is something wrong with the switch.

Is there a possibity that SCTV give a signal out that "confused" the Airport somehow?

I only know that only a few switches are supported with Swisscom TV, so be carefull there.

So I connecting the Box and the Access point to the router directly solved the issue, why don't you do this?

Ok. Good to know. How do I find out which switches are good? The router in the "fusebox" located in the utility room, from where the phone and internet is dividend amoung two rooms in the flat (via cables in the walls). I cannot get a proper wlan signal out from the utility room.

I am not sure if that will solve the issue since I don't really understand what is the cause.

But I'm pretty sure that you need a supported switch (if you really need one).

Otherwise simply use one of the 4 ports of your swisscom router (without an additional switch)

I compared the specs of the Zyxel and Netgear switches and in paper there are some differences so it might be a solution.I will try the Netgear switch and report back. And as said the option to connect directly to the router is not really an option because of the current location of the router.
